What Is the Army Fitness Test (AFT)?
The Army Fitness Test (AFT) is the current physical fitness assessment for all U.S. Army personnel, effective June 1, 2025, under Army Directive 2025-06. It replaced the Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT) by removing the Standing Power Throw, leaving five scored events [1].
The AFT evaluates muscular strength, muscular endurance, anaerobic capacity, core endurance, and aerobic fitness through five functional events. For the previous 6-event test format, see our ACFT Calculator.
AFT Events
- 3-Rep Max Deadlift (MDL): Maximum weight (lbs) lifted for 3 repetitions using a hex bar. Tests lower-body and grip strength.
- Hand-Release Push-Up (HRP): Maximum reps in 2 minutes. Hands must lift from the floor between each rep. Tests upper-body muscular endurance.
- Sprint-Drag-Carry (SDC): Timed event combining 50m sprint, 50m sled drag (90 lbs), lateral shuffle, 50m carry (2×40-lb kettlebells), and 50m sprint. Tests anaerobic capacity and functional strength.
- Plank (PLK): Maximum hold time in the front plank position. Tests core endurance.
- 2-Mile Run (2MR): Timed 2-mile run. Tests aerobic fitness.
Scoring Standards: General vs. Combat
The AFT uses two scoring standards based on MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) category [2]:
- General Standard: Sex- and age-normed scoring. 0–100 points per event, 60 minimum per event, 300 minimum total. Applies to most MOS categories.
- Combat Standard: Sex-neutral, age-normed scoring. 0–100 points per event, 70 minimum per event, 350 minimum total. Applies to combat MOS.
For a broader view of military fitness across branches, see our Navy PRT Calculator or Physical Fitness Test Calculator.
ACFT to AFT Transition
The primary change from ACFT to AFT is the removal of the Standing Power Throw (SPT). All other events remain the same. ACFT scores recorded before May 2025 remain valid for their intended period of record. The AFT scoring scales were published in the official AFT Scoring Scales document effective June 1, 2025.
If you need to reference historical ACFT scoring, our ACFT Calculator remains available. For the legacy APFT (1980–2020), see our APFT Calculator.
