Key Takeaways

  • Mowing MET values range from 2.5 (riding mower) to 6.0 (hand reel mower) per the 2024 Compendium.[1]
  • A 30-minute walk-behind power mower session estimates approximately 202 kcal for a 70 kg person.[2]
  • Using a hand reel mower burns about 2.4× the calories of a riding mower for the same duration.[1]
  • Sloped or hilly terrain adds approximately 15% to the calorie estimate.
  • These are informational estimates for personal journaling. Individual results vary with conditions.

How the Estimate Works

The calculator uses the standard MET formula from the 2024 Compendium, with an optional terrain modifier:[1]

Calories = (MET × Terrain_multiplier × 3.5 × Wt_kg × Duration_min) ÷ 200

The terrain modifier is a transparent adjustment: flat = 1.0×, sloped/hilly = 1.15×. This approximation accounts for the additional effort of pushing a mower up inclines.
