Key Takeaways

  • Gardening MET values range from 2.0 (light general gardening) to 7.3 (vigorous digging) according to the 2024 Compendium.[1]
  • A 30-minute moderate gardening session estimates approximately 139 kcal for a 70 kg person.[2]
  • Vigorous tasks like digging and chopping wood burn 2–3 times the calories of light tasks like watering.[1]
  • Multiple gardening tasks in a single session combine different intensity levels.
  • These are informational estimates for personal journaling. Individual results vary with technique and conditions.

How the Estimate Works

The calculator uses the standard MET formula with activity MET values from the 2024 Compendium of Physical Activities — Lawn & Garden category:[1]

Calories = (MET × 3.5 × Wt_kg × Duration_min) ÷ 200

MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) represents the energy cost relative to rest. Light gardening (2.0 MET) is twice the resting metabolic rate, while vigorous digging (7.3 MET) is over seven times resting rate.

Intensity Selection Guide

Choose an activity matching the primary task you perform in the garden:

Light (2–3.5 MET)

Watering, light cleanup, trimming with manual tools. Standing and gentle movement predominates.

Moderate (3.5–5.5 MET)

Weeding, planting, raking, pushing wheelbarrow. Sustained bending, lifting, and walking throughout.

Vigorous (5.5–7.5 MET)

Deep digging, chopping wood, shoveling dirt. Continuous full-body effort with heavy loads.

Session Logging Tips

If you perform multiple gardening tasks in one session, consider logging each task segment separately for a more precise estimate. For example:

  • 15 minutes of weeding (3.8 MET) + 15 minutes of digging (5.0 MET)
  • Calculate each segment separately and add the totals.
  • Or select the activity closest to your overall average effort.
