How the Estimate Works

This calculator uses two simple pathways. For outdoor or flat walking, it uses pace-based MET values from the physical activity compendium. For treadmill walking with grade, it uses the treadmill walking equation to estimate oxygen cost and then turns that into calories.[1][2][4]

The tool then keeps the practical session details visible: time, distance, speed, pace, and optional steps. That makes it work more like a transparent walking log and less like a one-number black box.

Time vs Distance vs Steps

People track walks in different ways. Some know the duration, some know the route distance, and some mainly have a step count. This tool supports all three because they are all common journaling starting points.

When you use steps mode, the page does not guess calories directly from steps alone. It first uses step length to turn steps into distance, then uses pace to estimate time, and only then calculates calories. That keeps the logic more honest.[3][5]

Pace and Speed
