What Is Zig-Zag Calorie Cycling?
Calorie cycling (also called zig-zag dieting) alternates between higher and lower calorie days throughout the week while maintaining the same weekly calorie total as a flat daily approach. The concept is that varying daily intake may help with adherence by allowing higher-calorie days around training or social events.
For example, instead of eating 2,000 calories every day (14,000/week), you might eat 2,300 on three high days and 1,780 on four low days — same weekly total, different daily distribution.
How the Calculator Works
- BMR Calculation: Uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation — the most validated predictive equation for resting metabolic rate
- TDEE: BMR × activity multiplier gives your estimated daily energy needs
- Weekly Budget: (TDEE ± daily adjustment) × 7 = weekly calorie budget
- Day Distribution: High days get +15%, low days get -15% of the daily average, and medium days stay at the average. Adjust the number of high/low days to customize your pattern.
