How Many Calories Do You Need?
This calculator estimates your daily calorie needs using established BMR formulas and activity multipliers. It provides a single, goal-adjusted calorie target with macro breakdown — designed as the unified "how many calories should I eat" tool [1].
For formula-specific deep dives, see our Mifflin-St Jeor Calculator or Harris-Benedict Calculator.
BMR Formulas Compared
- Mifflin-St Jeor (default): Most accurate for the general population according to multiple validation studies [2]
- Harris-Benedict: The classic formula, tends to slightly overestimate compared to Mifflin-St Jeor
- Katch-McArdle: Uses lean body mass, making it more accurate for athletes with known body fat percentage
Goal Adjustments
The goal multiplier adjusts your maintenance TDEE by a percentage:
- Maintain (0%): Eat at maintenance calories
- Mild Surplus (+10–15%): For gradual lean mass building
- Moderate Surplus (+20%): For focused bulking phases
- Mild Deficit (−15%): Sustainable reduction pace
- Moderate Deficit (−20%): More aggressive, requires adequate protein
For more detailed deficit planning, see our Calorie Deficit Calculator. For macro-specific calculators, see Protein Calculator and Carb Calculator.
