How Many Carbs Do You Need?
The Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) sets the Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Range (AMDR) for carbohydrates at 45–65% of total daily calories [1]. For active individuals, carbohydrate needs are better expressed in grams per kilogram of body weight, ranging from 3–10 g/kg depending on activity type and intensity.
Carb Ranges by Activity
- Endurance (6–10 g/kg/day): Supports glycogen replenishment for runners, cyclists, and swimmers (ACSM) [2]
- Strength Training (3–5 g/kg/day): Adequate fuel for resistance training while allowing room for higher protein
- General Activity (3–5 g/kg/day): Suitable for recreationally active adults
- Low-Carb Reference (<130 g/day): For informational comparison only
Fiber Recommendation
The DRI recommends approximately 25–38g of fiber daily (25g for adult females, 38g for adult males). Fiber-rich carb sources like legumes, whole grains, and vegetables contribute to both carbohydrate and fiber intake [3].
