In 1919, James Arthur Harris and Francis Gano Benedict published their landmark study measuring the basal metabolism of 239 subjects (136 men, 103 women) at the Carnegie Nutrition Laboratory. Their equation became the standard for BMR prediction for over 60 years.[1]
