What Is the Air Force PFA?
The Air Force Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA), governed by AFMAN 36-2905, evaluates four fitness components on a 100-point composite scale: Cardio (50 pts), Body Composition via Waist-to-Height Ratio (20 pts), Strength (15 pts), and Core Endurance (15 pts) [1].
The updated PFA replaces the previous waist-only measurement with a waist-to-height ratio and adds multiple exercise options per component, giving Airmen flexibility in how they demonstrate fitness.
PFA Components and Options
- Cardio (50 pts): 2-Mile Run OR 20-Meter HAMR (High Aerobic Multi-shuttle Run)
- Body Composition (20 pts): Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR). Lower ratios score higher.
- Strength (15 pts): 1-Minute Push-Ups OR 2-Minute Hand-Release Push-Ups
- Core (15 pts): 1-Minute Sit-Ups, 2-Minute Cross-Leg Reverse Crunches, OR Timed Forearm Plank

Passing Standards
A composite score of 75 or higher is required to pass. Scores of 90+ earn an "Excellent" rating, while scores between 75–89.9 receive "Satisfactory." Below 75 is "Unsatisfactory" [2].
