Key Takeaways

  • The VO2max method estimates equivalent running fitness by calculating VO2max from your erg performance (Hagerman/Concept2 formula), then mapping it to predicted running times using established VDOT relationships.[1]
  • The 1.25:1 distance ratio (500m row = 400m run) is a simplified conversion popular in CrossFit and multi-sport programming — useful for WOD scaling but not physiologically precise.[2]
  • Rowing-to-running transfer depends heavily on running economy — a strong rower without running training will underperform these predictions significantly.
  • VO2max is not the only determinant of running performance. Lactate threshold, running economy, and neuromuscular factors all play roles.

The VO2max Conversion Method

This method uses the Hagerman/Ohio University formula to estimate VO2max from erg watts: VO2max = (watts × 10.8 + 350) / body weight (kg). This formula was validated for male rowers; the female version uses a slightly lower coefficient (10.1) to account for average mechanical efficiency differences.[1]

Once VO2max is estimated, we convert it to equivalent running velocity and race times using the Daniels-Gilbert model — the same quadratic VO2-velocity relationship and exponential duration curve used in the VDOT system. The sustainable fraction of VO2max decreases with race duration following the Daniels exponential decay function.[3]

Limitations of Cross-Modal Conversion

Rowing and running use different muscle groups and movement patterns. A rower who rarely runs will have poor running economy (higher oxygen cost per km), meaning their actual running times will be worse than VO2max-based predictions suggest. Conversely, a rower who also runs regularly may match or exceed these predictions.
