Key Takeaways

  • Critical Power (CP) is the highest ergometer power output you can sustain in a metabolic steady state. Above CP, fatigue accumulates and exhaustion is inevitable.[1]
  • W' (W-prime) is the finite anaerobic work capacity above CP, measured in kilojoules. A typical trained rower has a W' of 15–30 kJ.[2]
  • FTP is estimated as CP × 0.95 — a practical training anchor for building rowing training zones.
  • In a 2K race, you deplete most or all of your W'. Knowing both CP and W' tells you how much above-threshold effort you can afford.

How to Test Rowing CP and W'

Perform 2–3 all-out ergometer time trials at different durations with full recovery between (ideally on separate days). Recommended durations:[3]

  • 2-test protocol: 3-minute and 12-minute all-out efforts
  • 3-test protocol: 3-minute, 6-minute, and 12-minute efforts (higher accuracy)

Each effort must be truly maximal with even pacing. Conservative pacing underestimates CP while going out too hard inflates W' at the expense of CP accuracy. The R² value indicates model fit — aim for R² > 0.95.

Using CP for Race Pacing

CP is ideal for pacing strategy: any effort above CP depletes W' at a predictable rate. For a 2K race lasting ~6–7 minutes, plan to start near CP, use W' strategically in the start and sprint, and avoid excessive early depletion.
