What Is the Magic Mile?
The Magic Mile is a 1-mile time trial developed by running coach Jeff Galloway after working with over 300,000 runners across 40+ years. It uses your best mile effort to predict realistic race paces for distances from 5K to the marathon [1].
Unlike lab-based assessments, the Magic Mile requires only a measured mile and a stopwatch. You can repeat the time trial every 2–4 weeks to track fitness progress throughout your training season.
The Galloway Formulas
- 5K pace: Magic Mile time + 33 seconds per mile
- 10K pace: Magic Mile time × 1.15
- 10-Mile pace: Magic Mile time × 1.175
- Half Marathon pace: Magic Mile time × 1.2
- Marathon pace: Magic Mile time × 1.3
These multipliers assume appropriate distance-specific training and favorable race conditions (60°F / 16°C or cooler). Hot weather will slow actual race paces compared to these predictions.
How to Run Your Magic Mile
- Warm up with a slow 1-mile jog
- Do a few acceleration gliders (gradually increase speed over 50–100 meters)
- Run 1 measured mile at a hard, steady effort — pace yourself evenly across each quarter
- Finish feeling you could not have maintained the pace for more than another 100 meters
- Walk for 5 minutes to recover, then jog easy miles as needed
Walk breaks are permitted during the Magic Mile. If using the run-walk method, shorten your walk intervals compared to your normal training ratio [1].
