How the Estimate Works

The calculator uses the standard MET formula with stroke-specific MET values from the Compendium Water Activities section:[1]

Calories = (MET × 3.5 × Wt_kg × Duration_min) ÷ 200

Time-based mode applies the stroke MET for the entered duration. Lap-based mode estimates duration from stroke-specific pace (yards per minute, converted to meters), then applies the MET formula. In lap mode, you also get per-lap calorie estimates and total distance.

Freestyle / Front Crawl

The most common lap-swimming stroke. MET ranges from 5.8 (slow) to 14.5 (racing). Medium pace (~50 yd/min) at 8.0 MET is the typical training benchmark.[1]

Butterfly

The most demanding stroke at 13.8 MET. Requires synchronized arm and dolphin kick movement. Typically swum in shorter sets due to high intensity.[1]

Breaststroke
