StairMaster Calorie Estimation
StairMaster-type machines (also called stair-treadmill ergometers or revolving staircases) provide a consistent stepping workout where the intensity is controlled by the machine level, which determines step cadence. This calculator maps each of the 20 standard intensity levels to estimated MET values and step rates, giving you a more precise calorie estimate than a single generic "stair machine" figure.
The 2024 Compendium of Physical Activities lists stair-treadmill ergometers at 9.3 METs for general use (code 02065). This calculator expands that into a full 20-level range from 4.0 to 12.5 METs based on cadence scaling and published VO2 research.
How the Formula Works
The standard MET-based calorie formula is:

Intensity Zones Explained
- Warm-up (Levels 1–2): 24–33 steps/min, 4.0–4.5 METs. Light effort suitable for warm-up or cool-down.
- Light (Levels 3–4): 39–50 steps/min, 5.0–6.0 METs. Easy to moderate pace for longer sessions.
- Moderate (Levels 5–7): 57–75 steps/min, 6.5–8.0 METs. Steady-state workout intensity.
- Challenging (Levels 8–9): 85–100 steps/min, 8.5–9.0 METs. Above average effort.
- Hard (Levels 10–13): 105–120 steps/min, 9.3–10.2 METs. High intensity, sustained effort.
- Intense (Levels 14–20): 130–162 steps/min, 10.5–12.5 METs. Maximum effort, short duration recommended.
Handrail Usage Impact
Research indicates that holding onto handrails during stair stepping can reduce energy expenditure by approximately 20–25%. This is because handrail support partially offloads body weight and reduces the muscular demand. This calculator provides a handrail-adjusted estimate using a 22.5% reduction factor.
For the most accurate estimates, minimize handrail use — light fingertip contact for balance is generally better than full-grip support.
