Estimating Sled Push & Pull Calories

Sled pushing and pulling (also called prowler work) is a popular strength-and-conditioning exercise used for work capacity, acceleration training, and metabolic conditioning. Because the effort is highly variable — depending on sled load, surface friction, speed, and distance — there is no single MET code in the Compendium of Physical Activities for sled exercises.

This calculator uses load-to-bodyweight ratio tiers to estimate MET values, ranging from 5.0 METs for light drags to 11.0 METs for max-effort sprint pushes, with a surface friction adjustment factor.

How the Formula Works

The standard MET-based calorie formula is:

Calories = (MET × 3.5 × body weight in kg × duration in minutes) ÷ 200

The MET value is automatically selected based on the ratio of sled load to body weight, then adjusted by a surface friction factor (0.85 for concrete up to 1.10 for heavy turf). For general MET calculations, see our MET Calculator.

Load-to-Bodyweight Ratio

The load-to-bodyweight ratio is the primary driver of intensity classification:

  • Below 0.25: Light effort — recovery drags, warm-up, or technique practice (5.0 METs)
  • 0.25 – 0.50: Moderate effort — standard working sets, steady sustained pace (7.0 METs)
  • 0.50 – 0.75: Vigorous effort — heavy training loads, high muscular demand (9.0 METs)
  • Above 0.75: Max effort — short sprint pushes, near-maximal loading (11.0 METs)

Surface Friction Impact

The surface you push or pull on significantly affects the effort required. Smooth concrete has less friction than turf or high-drag lanes, meaning the same sled weight requires less force to move on hard surfaces.

  • Concrete / Asphalt: 0.85× — lowest friction, easiest to move
  • Rubber Floor / Track: 0.95× — moderate friction
  • Turf / Artificial Grass: 1.0× — baseline reference surface
  • Heavy Turf / High-Drag Lane: 1.10× — highest friction, hardest surface

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter your body weight and the weight loaded on the sled
  2. Select the exercise type (push, pull/drag, or combo)
  3. Choose the surface you train on (turf, rubber, concrete, etc.)
  4. Enter total working time (exclude rest periods)
  5. Review your load ratio, intensity tier, and calorie estimates
