Key Takeaways

  • Kayaking MET values range from 3.5 (leisure paddling) to 12.5 (racing/competition) per the 2024 Compendium.[1]
  • A 30-minute moderate kayaking session estimates approximately 184 kcal for a 70 kg person.[2]
  • Water conditions (current, wind, chop) can increase the effort by 5–20% over calm flatwater.
  • Whitewater kayaking demands significantly more effort than flatwater touring.
  • These are informational estimates for personal journaling. Individual results vary.

How the Estimate Works

The calculator uses the standard MET formula with an optional water condition modifier:[1]

Calories = (MET × Water_modifier × 3.5 × Wt_kg × Duration_min) ÷ 200

The water condition modifier reflects the additional paddling effort required to maintain pace against current, wind, or waves. Calm flatwater uses a 1.0× base; strong current/rough water applies a 1.2× multiplier.
