Key Takeaways

  • The Kosmin test predicts 800m and 1500m race times from repeated 60-second maximal running efforts.[1]
  • Uses sex-specific regression formulas developed from Soviet sports science research.
  • Simple field test — requires only a marked running surface and a stopwatch.
  • Excellent for tracking anaerobic fitness progress over a training cycle without requiring a full race effort.

What Is the Kosmin Test?

The Kosmin test is a Soviet-origin field assessment that predicts middle-distance race performance from short, maximal running efforts. Rather than running the full race distance, athletes perform 2–4 timed 60-second maximal sprints with rest between them. The total distance covered is entered into a prediction formula.[1]

This makes it a practical tool for coaches and athletes who want to estimate race readiness without the recovery cost of a full race or time trial. For longer-distance predictions, see our Running Performance Calculator or the Cooper 12-Min Run Calculator.

Test Protocols

800m Prediction Test (2 × 60s)

Two maximal 60-second running efforts with 3–5 minutes of walking recovery between them. Record the distance covered in each effort and sum them. This total is entered into the 800m prediction formula.

1500m Prediction Test (4 × 60s)

Four maximal 60-second running efforts with 3 minutes of walking recovery between each. Sum all four distances for the total. This tests both speed and fatigue resistance, making it a better predictor for the longer event.

Prediction Formulas

Male 800m: Time (sec) = 217.78 − (Total Distance × 0.1196)
Female 800m: Time (sec) = 1451.46 − (198.54 × log₁₀(Total Distance))
Male 1500m: Time (sec) = 500.53 − (Total Distance × 0.1622)
Female 1500m: Male 1500m time + 10 seconds

These formulas were derived from correlational analysis of test results and actual race performances. For pace-based analysis of your predicted times, use our Running Pace Calculator.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Select sex and target distance — Different formulas apply for 800m vs. 1500m and male vs. female.
  2. Perform the test — Run 2 efforts (for 800m) or 4 efforts (for 1500m) of 60 seconds each at maximum intensity.
  3. Measure and sum distances — Use a marked track or GPS for accuracy.
  4. Enter the total distance — The calculator applies the appropriate formula.
  5. Track progress — Repeat every 4–6 weeks to monitor fitness development.
