How the Conversion Works
Step counters and fitness trackers only measure activities that involve stepping motions. Cycling, swimming, weightlifting, and many other exercises don't register steps — even though they burn significant energy. This converter bridges that gap.[1]
The conversion uses MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) values as a universal measure of exercise intensity. Moderate walking at 3 mph has a MET of 3.5 and generates approximately 100 steps per minute. An activity with a MET of 7.0 (twice as intense as walking) would generate 200 equivalent steps per minute.[2]

The 10,000 Step Goal
The 10,000 steps/day goal originated from a Japanese marketing campaign in the 1960s for a pedometer called "Manpo-kei" (10,000 steps meter). While the number itself isn't a scientifically derived threshold, research supports that higher daily step counts are associated with general physical activity benefits.[4]

- Moderate (3.0–6.0 METs): Brisk walking, cycling, gardening
- Vigorous (6.0–9.0 METs): Running, swimming laps, basketball
- Very vigorous (9.0+ METs): Sprinting, jump rope, martial arts
