Estimating Calories Burned During Tai Chi

Tai Chi and Qi Gong are movement-based practices that combine slow, deliberate postures with controlled breathing. The energy expenditure varies significantly depending on the style, speed of movement, depth of stances, and practitioner experience level.

This calculator uses MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) values from the 2024 Compendium of Physical Activities, the standard research reference for activity energy expenditure estimation.

Understanding MET Values

One MET equals your resting energy expenditure (approximately 3.5 mL of oxygen per kg per minute). An activity rated at 3.3 METs uses about 3.3 times more energy than sitting quietly. The formula is:

Calories = (MET × 3.5 × body weight in kg × duration in minutes) ÷ 200

Tai Chi Styles and Intensity

  • Seated Tai Chi (1.5 METs): Chair-based practice, ideal for limited mobility or as a warm-up
  • General Tai Chi / Qi Gong (3.3 METs): Standard mixed-style practice at a moderate pace
  • Chen Style (4.5 METs): Includes explosive movements, lower stances, and faster transitions
  • Yang Style (6.0 METs): The traditional 108-form practice performed with deep, continuous stances

The actual energy expenditure can vary based on individual fitness level, stance depth, arm positioning, and environmental conditions.
