The EPOC (Afterburn) Effect from Sprinting

EPOC (Excess Post-exercise Oxygen Consumption) refers to the elevated metabolic rate that continues after intense exercise ends. Sprinting generates higher EPOC than any other running intensity because it creates greater oxygen debt and metabolic disturbance.[2]

  • Intermediate (weeks 5–8): 8 × 30-sec sprints with 60-sec rest. High intensity (90% effort). 2–3 sessions per week.
