Understanding Muscle-to-Fat Ratio
The muscle-to-fat ratio expresses the relationship between lean body mass and fat mass. A higher ratio indicates more lean tissue relative to fat tissue. This metric is used in body composition analysis tools like InBody scanners to provide a body type classification (C-shape, I-shape, D-shape).
The formula is straightforward: Ratio = Lean Mass ÷ Fat Mass. For example, a person weighing 80 kg with 15% body fat has 68 kg lean mass and 12 kg fat mass, giving a ratio of 5.67.
Body Shape Classification
The classification system uses letter shapes to describe body composition profiles:
- C-Shape (ratio < 2.0): High relative fat mass (roughly above 33% body fat). This profile indicates elevated fat relative to lean tissue.
- I-Shape (ratio 2.0 – 4.0): Average lean-to-fat balance, typical of the general population (roughly 20–33% body fat).
- D-Shape (ratio 4.0 – 7.0): Lean mass well exceeds fat mass (roughly 12–20% body fat). Typical of regular exercisers and fitness-oriented individuals.
- Athletic D-Shape (ratio > 7.0): Very high lean mass relative to fat (below ~12% body fat). Common in competitive athletes.
