Key Takeaways

  • BAI estimates body fat percentage from hip circumference and height—no scale needed.[1]
  • BAI has an accuracy of ±3–4% and is not more accurate than BMI per validation studies.[2]
  • Classification ranges differ by sex: normal is 8–21% for males and 21–33% for females.
  • Best used alongside BMI for a two-perspective view rather than as a standalone metric.

What Is the Body Adiposity Index?

The Body Adiposity Index (BAI) was developed by Bergman et al. (2011) as an alternative to BMI that directly estimates body fat percentage without requiring body weight.[1] The formula uses hip circumference and height—which makes it useful in field settings where scales are unavailable.

For other body composition metrics, see our FFMI Calculator, Body Roundness Index Calculator, or Waist-to-Hip Ratio Calculator.

BAI vs BMI — Which Is Better?

Neither is definitively better. BMI uses weight and height but does not distinguish fat from muscle. BAI uses hip circumference and height and directly estimates fat percentage, but Freedman et al. (2012) found it is not more accurate than BMI when validated against DXA scans.[2] Both are screening estimates—not precision body composition tools. Using both together provides a broader perspective.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Select your sex (classification ranges differ).
  2. Measure your hip circumference at the widest point around your buttocks.
  3. Enter your height and weight (weight is used only for BMI comparison).
  4. Review your BAI, BMI, and the side-by-side classification comparison.
