Understanding Volume and Intensity

Training volume and intensity are the two fundamental variables in resistance training programming. Volume represents the total mechanical work performed (sets × reps × load), while intensity refers to how heavy you lift relative to your maximum (% of 1RM).

This calculator analyzes your training session to determine whether it is volume-dominant (high reps at moderate loads), intensity-dominant (heavy loads with fewer reps), or balanced between the two.

Prilepin's Chart

Prilepin's Chart (A.S. Prilepin, 1974) is derived from analysis of Soviet Olympic weightlifters and provides optimal rep ranges for different intensity zones:

  • Below 70% 1RM: 18–30 total reps — power endurance and hypertrophy
  • 70–80% 1RM: 12–24 total reps — strength-hypertrophy balance
  • 80–90% 1RM: 10–20 total reps — maximal strength
  • Above 90% 1RM: 1–10 total reps — peaking and neural adaptation

Need to estimate your 1RM? Use our One Rep Max Calculator.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Add each exercise in your session with sets, reps, working weight, and estimated 1RM
  2. The calculator computes volume (tonnage), relative intensity (%1RM), and Prilepin zone for each exercise
  3. Review the session summary — total volume, average intensity, and session classification
  4. Compare your rep totals against Prilepin's optimal ranges for your intensity zone
