Understanding RPE in Running
Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) on the modified Borg CR-10 scale lets runners gauge effort without relying solely on pace or heart rate. This is particularly useful on hot days, hilly terrain, or during fatigued states where pace alone is misleading.
The 1–10 scale maps to standard running training zones: easy runs at RPE 3–4, tempo at RPE 5–6, threshold at RPE 7, VO2max intervals at RPE 8, and sprints at RPE 9–10.
Session-RPE for Runners
The session-RPE method multiplies your RPE by the run duration to quantify training stress. This allows comparison across different types of workouts — a 30-minute tempo at RPE 7 (load = 210) versus a 60-minute easy run at RPE 3 (load = 180).
