Key Takeaways
- Naismith's Rule estimates 5 km/h on flat ground plus 1 hour for every 600 m of ascent — the standard since 1892.[1]
- Tobler's hiking function refines the estimate by accounting for descent: gentle downhill is faster, steep downhill is slower.[2]
- Terrain difficulty, pack weight, and fitness level can add 15–50% to base hiking time.[3]
How the Calculation Works
The calculator uses two complementary methods:
Naismith: time = (distance ÷ 5 km/h) + (elevation gain ÷ 600 m/h)
Tobler: speed = 6 × e^(−3.5 × |slope + 0.05|)
The higher of the two raw estimates is selected, then multiplied by fitness, terrain, and pack weight factors. Break time is added on top of moving time.

Factors That Affect Hiking Time
Elevation gain is typically the single largest factor. A 10 km hike with 1,000 m of gain takes roughly twice as long as the same distance on flat terrain.
Terrain type affects foot placement speed. Rocky trails slow movement by ~15%, off-trail by ~30%, and scrambling by up to 50% compared to smooth trails.[3]
Pack weight increases energy expenditure. Carrying loads over 15 kg adds roughly 12% to travel time due to increased metabolic demand and reduced stride efficiency.[1]
For planning walking routes on flat ground, see the Walking Time Calculator.
Limitations and Important Notes
- Naismith's Rule and Tobler's function are population averages — individual variation is substantial.
- Weather conditions (heat, rain, snow, wind) are not modeled but can significantly increase hiking time.
- Altitude above 2,500 m may reduce performance by 10–20% due to lower oxygen availability.
