What Is the Harvard Step Test?

Short Form

Rapid Form

Test Protocol

  1. 1Set up a sturdy step or bench at the appropriate height: 20 inches (51 cm) for men, 16 inches (41 cm) for women.
  2. 2Use a metronome set to 120 BPM (which produces 30 complete step cycles per minute: up-up-down-down).
  3. 3Step for 5 minutes (300 seconds) or until unable to maintain the cadence for 15 consecutive seconds.
  4. 4Immediately sit down after completing the test. Record total stepping duration in seconds.
