Understanding RPE in Cycling
Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) is a subjective scale that rates how hard a workout feels. In cycling, the modified Borg CR-10 scale (1–10) is widely used because it maps directly onto power-based training zones established by researchers like Andrew Coggan.
Using RPE is especially valuable on days when a power meter is unavailable, during outdoor group rides, or when adapting to fatigue and environmental conditions. It provides a quick internal gauge of training intensity.
RPE and Power Zones
Coggan's 7-zone power model correlates with RPE values. Zone 1 (active recovery) aligns with RPE 1–2, while Zone 4 (threshold at ~FTP) corresponds to RPE 7. Above threshold, RPE 8–10 covers VO2max, anaerobic, and neuromuscular efforts.

Session Load (sRPE)
Session load is calculated as RPE x Duration (minutes). This is the Foster et al. (2001) session-RPE method, widely validated for monitoring training stress across endurance sports. A 60-minute ride at RPE 5 produces a session load of 300 AU (Arbitrary Units), while 90 minutes at RPE 7 produces 630 AU.

When to Use RPE vs Power
- Use RPE when riding without a power meter, during group rides, on unfamiliar terrain, or when fatigued and power data may not reflect true effort.
- Use power for structured interval training, FTP tests, and comparing performance across sessions.
- Combine both — if RPE is much higher than expected for a given power output, it may indicate accumulated fatigue, dehydration, or environmental stress.
