Bicep-to-Thigh Proportionality
In bodybuilding and physique training, the ratio between bicep and thigh circumference is a key proportionality metric. The classic guideline is that the thigh should be approximately 1.5 times the size of the bicep (a 2:3 bicep-to-thigh ratio). This standard comes from classic physique proportionality models developed by John McCallum and Steve Reeves.
Why Measure Both Sides?
Measuring left and right separately provides a bilateral symmetry assessment. Most people have a dominant side that is slightly larger (typically 1–3% difference). A difference greater than 7% may indicate an imbalance worth addressing in training.
- 97%+ symmetry: Excellent — minimal bilateral difference
- 93–97% symmetry: Normal variation — common in the general population
- Below 93%: Notable asymmetry — may warrant targeted programming
How to Measure
- Bicep (flexed): Flex your arm at 90° and measure the largest circumference of the upper arm
- Thigh (mid-thigh): Standing, measure at the midpoint between your hip joint and knee
- Use a flexible tape measure held snug but not tight
- Measure both sides for symmetry comparison
